Founded in 1911, EMC Insurance Companies is among the top 60 property/casualty organizations in the United States based on net written premium and is one of the largest in Iowa. EMC has more than 2,400 employees in 19 locations across the USA.

The Challenge

EMC had long understood the potential of the cloud, in particular its cost-effectiveness and simplicity, and had already migrated many of its workloads to Amazon Web Services (AWS). Having been seriously impressed by the results, EMC was keen to move its voice infrastructure in the same direction. To really maximize the cloud’s benefits, EMC needed a reliable voice connectivity solution that could be delivered in a managed services model with pay-per-use pricing.

The Solution

The secret key to this project’s success was something that AudioCodes is especially well-known for – teamwork and collaboration.

EMC worked closely with AudioCodes and AWS to design an innovative and unique solution that would tick all the right boxes, effortlessly combining the Amazon Chime Connector SIP trunk service with the AudioCodes Mediant Virtual Edition (VE) session border controller (SBC) to create a metered, pay-as-you-go communications infrastructure.

From EMC’s point of view, the Mediant VE SBC operates as a native AWS application, running as another cloud workload with all the AWS benefits that you’ve come to know and love, such as scalability and resiliency. It is also unique in the market with its pay-as-you-go pricing, bang in tune with Amazon Chime Voice Connector’s per-minute pricing model. Because there are no up-front costs involved, and customers pay only for the minutes consumed, unexpected bills are a thing of the past.

Just like all members of the AudioCodes Mediant SBC family, the Mediant VE offers vast, field-proven SIP interoperability ensuring seamless connectivity with practically any SIP-based voice platform or network, including the Cisco CUCM unified communications solution used by EMC and Amazon Chime Voice Connector SIP trunks.

The availability of the Mediant VE SBC on AWS Marketplace makes super fast deployment a reality. Furthermore, AudioCodes’ intuitive configuration wizard tool radically simplifies setting up connections with Amazon Chime Voice Connector SIP trunks.
