Those of you who follow these things might remember that, back in 2014, Cisco announced the end-of-sale and end-of-life dates for their VG224 analog voice gateway. You might also be aware that the solution proposed by Cisco for anyone using these devices is to upgrade to one of the their VG3xx analog voice gateways. Analog, after all, is still relevant. Anyone migrating to all-IP but who has a large install base of analog devices might not want to make the transition to IP phones just yet. The hospitality industry is a good example of such a scenario.
But although Cisco’s recommendation might at first seem like a logical progression, it actually raises some significant (and potentially costly) issues for the end user.
First of all, the VG3xx gateways are considerably more expensive than the VG224. And secondly, because VG3xx gateways aren’t compatible with some earlier Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CallManager) versions, it might be necessary to upgrade to a later version at the same time. Unfortunately, this will also likely incur substantial costs.
